PDC 2012 World Grand Prix Preview

After some time off after the World Matchplay, the PDC action started at the end of last month with the European Championship, then cotninued into Ireland with two Players Championship events before the main event in Dublin - the PDC World Grand Prix.

Like most PDC tournaments, this is another Phil Taylor Benefit, with The Power taking it down ten times, and he's the defending champion. The double-in format doesn't seem to bother him, unlike some of darts big names who tend to struggle on the doubles. Notables such as Gary Anderson and Dave Chisnall might just have a bit of bother this time round.

Like all PDC Majors, I'll be offering both a free tip for each day of competition, as well as a Premium Tips service. For £10, you get access to the Premium Tips for the entire week.

The Premium Tips have been running for three tournaments and these have been the results so far:

PDC World Matchplay: +16.92 units.
PDC UK Open: +7.62 units.
PDC Premier League: -18.43 units.

I won't sugar coat the Premier League results, but the UK Open was good for us, even though Robert Thornton gave the bookies the result they wanted. We then got a great result at the World Matchplay, so we're looking to keep the momentum going at the World Grand Prix.

Looking at the prices, Phil Taylor is starting at one of his biggest SPs for a tournament for a long time. The 9/4 might end up looking like a gift come the end of the tournament. He's not been in the greatest form recently, but it is The Power.

Michael van Gerwen is the form player on the PDC Tour, taking his four ProTour title of the year on Saturday, and he's a best price of 33/1 to take the title. A huge price for a young man that's playing great darts, finally, after taking the BDO by storm what seems like an eternity ago.

The best of the rest: Simon Whitlock finally picked up a ranking title, winning the European Championship, and he's a best price of 14/1 to take the World Grand Prix title. Justin Pipe won his Champions League Darts Group, beating Phil Taylor in the final, so he's coming into the tournament in form, and he's a best price of 40/1 to nab his first PDC Major. The other in-form player on the PDC ProTour is Ian White, and he's currently sitting at 66/1 to continue his magnificent form.

The men with "double trouble": these three just love to miss the doubles, and Gary Anderson sitting at between 14/1 and 20/1 is something I find amusing. He's known for his double trouble, and he's also struggled for form in 2012. Even if he ends up winning, I don't fancy the 20/1. Then we have another BDO alumni,Dave Chisnall, who hates his doubles as much as Anderson, if not more. His scoring might get him out of trouble, but he's 25/1. Fancy it? I'm not sure. And continuing the theme of the ex-BDO boys, we have Dean Winstanley who has shown his trouble on doubles already in his short tenure in the PDC. He's 66/1 to take down the title, and he's the same kind of player as Chisnall - all scoring, no doubling. That being said, if he can start hitting the doubles, he's a threat. But I can't see it just yet.

Last year's finalist: Last but not least, we have the fairytale story from last year, Brendan Dolan, who is a huge 125/1 to go one better than last year and win the World Grand Prix. Can lightning strike twice? Well, Dolan's playing better than some of the shorter priced players in the field, but I can't see it.
