Grand Slam of Darts 2011 Day 5 Tips

Well, we went 3-3 last night, taking us to 12-12 for the tournament, and a profit of +0.19 units.

So, while we had a good night, our stronger fancies just didn't come off. Michael van Gerwen must be the one player we can never get on the right side of, while Dean Winstanley just seems to be the money man for us.

We're into day five of our free Grand slam of Darts tips and we've had some great matches on show. The best news is that Ted Hankey is still alive and kicking in this tournament, which is only a good thing for us and for Ted and his family.

So, let's get on to our free tips for day five of the Grand Slam of Darts.

The markets at Betfair's are always great during the big darts tournaments. Betfair is traditionally the best value around and the ability to trade your position during a match is great. And add in the free bet promotions, you're onto a winner.

Adrian Lewis versus Vincent van der Voort.

The enigma that is Adrian Lewis has been playing some great darts during the Grand Slam and I fully expect him to come good again tonight. In theory he could still be eliminated if Vincent van der Voort win by some unbelievable margin and the Stompe/Phillips match goes the same way, so he won't want to take any chances.

His usual problem, finishing, hasn't been an issue and maybe he's back into the groove. He's no price for us here, and there's no real value to be had in any of the markets.

Recommend: No bet.

Wes Newton versus Barrie Bates.

I do feel sorry for Barrie Bates, but he has earned some money just for turning up to the Grand Slam of Darts and you can't begrudge him that. He's not played anywhere near the standard required. The fact he lost 5-1 to Magnus Caris sums up the trouble he's having.

Wes Newton will win this with ease, and the fact the handicap is at -3.5 sums up the trouble Bates is going to have.

However, I think the place to look at is the highest checkout market. We're only going to have a few legs and Newton's checkouts haven't been the highest. In fact, in his 4 legs against Paul Nicholson, his highest out was 63, and I doubt Bates will be putting him under huge pressure to take some big checkouts.

Highest checkout in Newton versus Bates match under 100.5: 5/6 @ 888.com .

Recommend: 2 units.

Steve Beaton versus James Hubbard.

I don't think James Hubbard has had a good time of it at the Grand Slam of Darts. He's been drawn against the big guns of Taylor, Beaton and King and although he hasn't disgraced himself, he hasn't got near winning. His average of 76.59 in his 5-3 defeat at the hands of Mervyn King showed the difference in class.

Beaton was unlucky in defeat to Phil Taylor and is playing well. He needs a win here and hope for a Taylor win over King to guarantee his place in the next round. He's going to do it, all that's up for debate is the margin of victory.

The -2.5 on the handicap is interesting, as I think Beaton more than just a slight edge here. He likes the tournament and will want to show he's playing well.

Steve Beaton -2.5 legs to beat James Hubbard: 5/6 @ Paddy Power.

Recommend: 2 units.

John Part versus Arron Monk.

The big disappointments of the second round of group games were John Part and, even more so, Arron Monk. Monk was shocking against Jan Dekker. Part wasn't much better against Mark Webster.

Both men will want a win here, but since their form is just shocking, let's leave them both alone.

Recommend: No bet.

Co Stompe versus Martin Phillips.

Could this be match of the night? I honestly think so. Both men are playing to a similar standard and they're both just unlucky to have come across Adrian Lewis in hot form. Stompe had no chance against Lewis, and Phillips just gotpipped at the post.

Working back through the Lewis form lines, Phillips looks to be a good thing here, as he pushed Lewis. The average of 98 that Stompe put in is a bit misleading, as he only had 2 darts at a double.

Both men need this, and although I do love Co Stompe, I don't think he will get through here.

Recommend: 2 units.

Phil Taylor versus Mervyn King.

What do you want me to say? Do I think King can cause an upset? No. Sure, over the short format, he might, but I can't see it. Good luck to him, but I think Taylor will take this easily to cement his place at the top of the group.

Recommend: No bet.

Mark Webster versus Jan Dekker.

Damn you, Jan Dekker! I wrote him off and he puts in a great performance against Arron Monk. But he'll need to play just as well, if not better, to trouble an in-form Mark Webster. The Welshman has been playing exceptionally well and is sitting comfortably at the top of the group.

The bookies has this right at around 4/11 for Webster, which is probably fair enough.

What's interesting is Mark Webster in the most 180s market. Dekker hit none in his win over Arron Monk, while Webster managed 2 in his victory over John Part. Both matches went 6 legs, so Webster at Evens is a lovely price.

Recommend: 2.5 units.

Paul Nicholson versus Magnus Caris.

Paul Nicholson is playing lovely darts. His victory over Wes Newton sums up how well he's playing. As much as I'd love Magnus Caris to win, Nicholson is just a class or two above the Swede.

Just call it an early night, watch some good darts and cheer on Caris, just because he's one of the good guys.

Recommend: No bet.

That's it for day five of the Grand Slam of Darts tips. Remember that day six features the return of The Count, so check back for that!

Instead of the usual Betfair shill, I thought I'd recommend our friends at 888 Sport. They've got up to £50 in free bets to give away to new accounts and their markets are plentiful, with great customer support. And if you get bored of sports betting (as if), their casino and poker software is amazing.

So, follow the link and enjoy your fun at 888.com .
